Bean yellow mosaic virus
Bean yellow
Description
Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Potyvirus within the Potyviridae family. This virus has a wide host range, primarily affecting plants in the Fabaceae family, as well as various ornamental species such as gladioli and freesia.
The disease affects key crops including beans, peas, lupines, and clover. Infected plants typically display distinct symptoms such as a chlorotic mosaic pattern on leaves, leaf distortion, curling, and stunting. In severe cases, the entire plant architecture becomes deformed, leading to poor pod development and reduced seed quality.
The biology of BYMV is centered around its ability to overwinter in perennial legumes, most notably clover, which serves as a primary reservoir for the virus. The pathogen is transmitted primarily by aphids in a non-persistent manner. This means that aphids can pick up the virus from an infected plant after only a few seconds of feeding and transmit it immediately to a healthy plant.
Environmental conditions that favor aphid movement and population growth are critical for the spread of BYMV. Warm and dry weather usually correlates with higher aphid activity, increasing the risk of virus introduction into commercial fields. Because the virus is not seed-borne in most bean varieties, the primary source of infection is always external.
The impact of BYMV on crop yield is significant, often resulting in heavy economic losses in commercial agriculture. Control measures focus on managing the aphid vector, using virus-free planting stock, planting resistant cultivars, and maintaining spatial separation between legume crops and known viral reservoirs like clover fields.
- Planting resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
- Creating spatial barriers between susceptible crops and perennial legumes.
- Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to control aphid populations.
- Removal of volunteer plants and weeds that act as virus hosts.
- Regular field scouting for early detection of mosaic symptoms.
