Peanut mottle (caused by the Peanut mottle virus, PeMoV) is a widespread viral disease affecting legume species. It poses a significant threat to agriculture, specifically impacting major commercial crops such as peanuts (Arachis hypogaea), soybeans, and common beans, leading to reduced yields and lower crop quality.
The causal agent is a potyvirus that is primarily transmitted in a non-persistent manner by various species of aphids. In addition to insect vectors, the virus can be disseminated through infected seeds, allowing the pathogen to persist across seasons and spread rapidly within a field once primary infection sites are established.
Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic mottle, mosaic patterns on the leaves, and sometimes leaf crinkling or distortion. In peanuts, systemic infection often results in dark green vein banding, while in soybeans, the symptoms can include significant stunting and reduced pod set, directly impacting the economic viability of the harvest.
The severity of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions that favor aphid population dynamics. Warm weather and the presence of reservoir hosts in neighboring wild vegetation are critical factors that facilitate the introduction and subsequent rapid secondary spread of the virus throughout the field.
Effective disease management strategies focus on preventing the introduction of the virus into the field. Key measures include the use of certified virus-free seeds, rigorous weed management to eliminate alternative plant hosts, and the strategic application of insecticides to manage aphid populations.
