Peanut mottle virus (PeMoV) is a significant plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Potyvirus within the family Potyviridae. It is a major threat to peanut production worldwide, causing widespread mosaic patterns and chlorosis in susceptible leguminous crops.
The virus affects Arachis hypogaea as its primary host, but it is also known to infect other important crops such as soybeans, peas, and green beans. Infected plants exhibit symptoms like leaf mottling, interveinal chlorosis, and stunting, which leads to reduced photosynthetic efficiency and diminished overall plant vigor.
The biological cycle of the virus involves transmission through insect vectors, primarily aphids such as Aphis craccivora, in a non-persistent, non-circulative manner. Furthermore, the virus is notably seed-borne, which allows it to persist within commercial peanut stocks and facilitate long-distance dispersal during planting.
Environmental factors heavily influence the spread of PeMoV. Warm temperatures combined with optimal moisture support rapid population growth of aphid vectors, leading to secondary infection cycles within the field. Weed reservoirs and alternative host plants nearby often serve as the primary inoculum sources at the start of the growing season.
The economic impact is primarily seen in yield loss and reduced seed quality. Effective control strategies require a multi-faceted approach, emphasizing the use of virus-free foundation seed, rigorous weed control to eliminate alternative hosts, and the strategic application of insecticides to manage aphid populations during the critical early growth stages of the crop.
