Pectobacterium peruviense is a destructive gram-negative bacterial pathogen belonging to the Pectobacteriaceae family. It is recognized primarily as the causative agent of bacterial soft rot, a disease that causes rapid tissue maceration in various vegetable crops, with potatoes being the most significantly affected agricultural host.

The pathogen primarily infects potatoes, affecting both the developing tubers and the aerial stems of the plants. Beyond potatoes, the bacterium has been identified in a range of other crops, making it a versatile and persistent threat in agricultural environments where sensitive host plants are cultivated in close proximity.

Symptomatology involves the enzymatic degradation of cell wall components, resulting in the softening of affected tissues and the formation of a malodorous, water-soaked rot. On potato tubers, this often manifests as deep, sunken lesions that rapidly spread throughout the structure, while stem infection leads to sudden wilting and plant collapse.

Epidemiological development is heavily dependent on moisture and temperature. The bacterium thrives in high-humidity conditions and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. It spreads extensively via infested seed tubers, contaminated farm machinery, water runoff, and insect vectors that create wound sites on the plant tissue, allowing the bacteria to enter.

Effective management requires an integrated approach starting with the use of certified, disease-free seed tubers. Because there are no curative chemical treatments for bacterial soft rot, prevention remains the primary defense. This includes maintaining optimal soil drainage, careful handling to minimize wounding during harvest, and strict sanitation of storage facilities.
