Pelargonium flower break

Pelargonium flower break is a serious viral disease caused by the Pelargonium flower break virus (PFBV). It is a member of the Carlavirus genus and is a significant concern for the horticultural industry, as it can cause widespread economic losses by compromising the aesthetic value of flowering plants.

The disease affects various species within the Pelargonium genus, including the common geranium (Pelargonium x hortorum), scented-leaf pelargoniums, and the ivy-leaf pelargonium (Pelargonium peltatum). Once infected, the plant remains a carrier of the virus throughout its entire lifespan.

The primary symptom is the appearance of light-colored streaks, blotches, or "breaks" in the natural color of the flower petals. These markings can vary in intensity and often result in deformed petals. Unlike natural variegation, these patterns are irregular and often accompanied by reduced plant vigor.

Transmission occurs through mechanical contact, such as contaminated pruning tools or during the process of taking cuttings from infected stock plants. Additionally, several aphid species serve as vectors, transmitting the virus from diseased plants to healthy ones when feeding on plant sap in greenhouse environments.

There is no chemical cure for PFBV, making prevention the only viable management strategy. Growers should implement strict sanitation protocols, utilize virus-tested propagation materials, and maintain rigorous pest control programs to eliminate potential vectors that could facilitate the spread of the disease.

• Sanitize all cutting tools with a 10% bleach solution or alcohol.
• Source propagation material only from certified virus-free nurseries.
• Implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan to control aphids.
• Routinely inspect plants and rogue any showing suspicious petal variegation.
