The family Peltulaceae refers to a group of lichens, not plant pathogens or disease agents. These organisms are ecologically significant components of biological soil crusts found in arid, semi-arid, and sometimes temperate environments, where they occupy bare soil surfaces.
These lichens are unique in their symbiotic association with cyanobacteria (primarily Gloeocapsa), which allows them to perform photosynthesis and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Their biological structure is adapted to harsh conditions, allowing them to remain dormant during long droughts and reactivate rapidly with minimal moisture.
There are no agricultural crops affected by Peltulaceae. They do not infect plant tissues, roots, or leaves and do not interfere with plant growth cycles. Claims suggesting that this family causes crop diseases are scientifically inaccurate, as they act as soil-stabilizing organisms rather than plant parasites.
The development of these lichens is highly dependent on light availability and the presence of open, undisturbed ground. In agricultural fields, they are rarely seen in healthy, dense crops, as they require direct exposure to sunlight to thrive. Their appearance in cultivated fields usually signals significant gaps in crop canopy or low-productivity soil zones.
No protective or chemical control measures are recommended or necessary for Peltulaceae. They do not cause economic damage to agricultural systems. In fact, they contribute to soil fertility through nitrogen fixation and improve soil structure, acting as a natural defense mechanism against topsoil erosion in marginal lands.
