Description
Penicillium arenicola is a microscopic fungus within the Penicillium genus known to cause mold and decay in various agricultural commodities. As a common soil-borne pathogen, it possesses strong saprotrophic capabilities, allowing it to colonize both organic debris and vulnerable plant tissues, particularly seeds and seedling roots under stress.
This fungus primarily infects the seeds of cereal, legume, and oilseed crops during storage or in the soil shortly after sowing. Penicillium arenicola excels at exploiting high-moisture environments and mechanical damage on the seed coat, which often occurs during mechanical harvesting and post-harvest handling processes.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by a distinct powdery mass of conidia, which appears in shades of blue-green or olive, coating the affected plant parts. As the infection progresses, the mycelium penetrates deeper into the seed or plant tissue, causing tissues to soften, rot, and eventually fail to germinate, resulting in significant stand loss.
Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the development and spread of Penicillium arenicola. High relative humidity (exceeding 70-75%) and temperatures between 18°C and 25°C are the primary drivers of fungal growth. The pathogen survives in the soil through resilient spores, often persisting on decomposing crop residues and awaiting favorable conditions to infect new hosts.
The economic impact of this pathogen is severe, primarily manifesting as reduced germination energy and poor crop establishment. To mitigate these risks, agricultural producers should focus on the following protective measures:
- Drying grain to safe moisture levels immediately after harvesting.
- Applying systemic and contact fungicides as seed treatments before planting.
- Implementing strict crop rotation to reduce the pathogen load in the soil.
- Maintaining well-ventilated storage facilities to prevent moisture pockets and heating.
