Description
Penicillium brevicompactum is a ubiquitous soil-borne fungus belonging to the genus Penicillium, acting as a pathogen responsible for seed decay and various rot diseases in agricultural plants. While primarily a saprotroph that decomposes organic matter, it frequently opportunistically infects weakened plant tissues, causing significant physiological stress and economic loss.
This pathogen has a broad host range, affecting cereals, corn, various vegetables, and fruits. It is most commonly identified during post-harvest storage, where it thrives on seeds and produce that have sustained mechanical damage, providing an entry point for the fungal mycelium to penetrate the host tissue.
The primary symptom of infection is the emergence of a dense, fuzzy colony, which typically appears white initially before turning a characteristic blue-green or grey-blue color. On seeds, the infection causes the embryo to blacken, significantly reducing germination rates and often causing the seedlings to rot before they can even emerge from the soil surface.
Development and spread of the fungus are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly humidity and temperature. Penicillium brevicompactum thrives in conditions of high humidity (exceeding 75%) and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. Under these conditions, the fungus produces an abundance of conidia, which are easily disseminated via air currents, water splashes, or contaminated tools.
The detrimental impact of this fungus lies in the direct loss of viable seed and the potential accumulation of harmful mycotoxins, which pose risks to human and animal health. Effective management strategies include the rigorous application of fungicidal seed treatments, maintaining strict moisture controls in storage facilities, and implementing preventative sanitation practices to minimize plant injuries throughout the growing season.
