The host range of this fungus is extensive, as it is a saprophyte that easily transitions to a parasitic lifestyle when plant defenses are weakened. It is particularly notorious for infecting seeds during germination, especially when soil temperatures are suboptimal, and for causing severe decay in bulbs, corms, and tubers during long-term storage.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of mycelial mats on the infected surface. This is typically observed as a dense, powdery mold with a distinct blue-green, olive-green, or gray-green coloration. Infected seeds become discolored and shriveled, while stored fruits or vegetables show soft, water-soaked lesions covered with the characteristic fungal sporulation.

High relative humidity (usually above 80%) combined with moderate to warm temperatures is ideal for rapid spore germination and mycelial growth. Poor air circulation in storage facilities creates micro-environments that allow the fungus to thrive and propagate rapidly between nearby items.

The primary approach involves ensuring high-quality, undamaged seed material and applying appropriate fungicidal seed treatments before planting. In storage, it is critical to maintain low moisture levels, optimize aeration, and keep temperatures as low as safely possible to inhibit fungal metabolic activity. Proper sanitation of storage facilities significantly reduces the primary inoculum load.
