Description

Penicillium oxalicum is a filamentous fungus widely known as a pathogen that causes various types of rot in agricultural crops. As a highly adaptive organism, it often acts as a secondary invader that thrives on damaged plant tissues, though it can also cause primary infections in seeds and seedlings under unfavorable environmental conditions.

This fungus affects a wide variety of plants, most notably corn, sunflowers, and many vegetable crops. It is particularly notorious for causing seed decay and seedling blight, which leads to significant stand reduction in commercial fields. Additionally, the fungus is a common post-harvest pathogen that degrades fruit quality during storage.

The primary symptom of infection is the appearance of a dusty, olive-green or blue-green sporulating mycelium on the surface of the affected plant material. As the fungus progresses, the infected tissue becomes soft, discolored, and eventually necrotic. In seeds, the pathogen rapidly destroys the embryo, preventing germination and leading to pre-emergence damping-off.

The development and spread of Penicillium oxalicum are heavily dependent on humidity and temperature. It thrives in high-moisture environments with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. The fungus survives in soil and on crop debris, making sanitation and proper rotation key factors in controlling the inoculum density in the field.

To mitigate the negative impact of this disease, farmers should implement a robust integrated pest management program. Effective measures include using high-quality fungicide seed treatments, ensuring optimal storage conditions with low humidity, and practicing proper field sanitation to reduce the amount of plant debris that harbors the pathogen's spores.
