Penicillium rot, caused by the fungus Penicillium vulpinum, is a destructive post-harvest and pre-emergence disease that significantly affects various agricultural commodities. This fungus targets a wide range of crops, including fruits, vegetables, and stored grain seeds. It acts as an opportunistic parasite, primarily exploiting injuries on plant tissues or vulnerable germination phases of seeds, which can lead to significant economic losses for producers.

Symptoms of the infection typically include a dusty, blue-green or gray mycelial mat covering the surface of the infected tissue.
