Peniophoraceae is a family of fungi that primarily functions as wood-decay agents. In silviculture and arboriculture, these fungi are recognized for their ability to colonize decaying timber and living trees, leading to significant structural degradation of wood tissues through the enzymatic breakdown of plant cell walls.
The pathogen is transmitted mainly through basidiospores that colonize exposed wood surfaces. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deeper into the heartwood and sapwood. This process is categorized as a white rot or complex wood decay, where the fungus progressively consumes lignin and cellulose, compromising the integrity of the host plant.
The host range includes a variety of conifers and broadleaf trees, such as spruce, pine, and various fruit trees. Trees that are already weakened by environmental stress, drought, or physical wounding are particularly susceptible to Peniophoraceae, as these injuries provide the entry points required for the fungal colonization.
Symptoms are often identified by the presence of crust-like or resupinate fruit bodies on the bark of infected branches or trunks. Internally, the wood may exhibit significant discoloration, a spongy or fibrous texture, and a loss of density. These structural changes often lead to limb failure or overall tree decline over several years.
Favorable conditions for fungal development include high humidity, stagnant airflow, and mild temperatures, which are common in dense forest environments or unpruned orchard settings. To mitigate the impact and prevent the spread of these fungi, specific management strategies are required:
- Sanitary removal of infected trees to eliminate inoculum sources.
- Protection of pruning wounds with appropriate sealants or wound paints.
- Promoting tree vigor through balanced fertilization and adequate hydration.
- Improving site drainage and ensuring proper spacing between trees to reduce ambient humidity.
