Periconia blight is a fungal disease caused by species within the Periconia genus. While often functioning as opportunistic saprobes, these fungi can behave as pathogens, colonizing living plant tissues and causing significant physiological stress, particularly when the host plant is weakened by environmental conditions or nutrient deficiencies.

The disease affects a broad range of crops, including corn, sorghum, various grasses, and some legumes. The pathogen is primarily soil-borne or persists on infected plant debris from previous seasons, making continuous monocropping an ideal scenario for the survival and multiplication of the fungal inoculum.

Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic lesions on leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, these lesions often develop a distinct dark, velvety growth on the surface, which consists of the fungus's conidiophores. In severe cases, the blight can lead to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a reduction in total biomass or seed yield.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in the development of Periconia blight. High humidity, heavy rainfall, and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C create a conducive environment for spore germination and colonization. Poor field drainage and dense canopy cover contribute significantly to disease progression by trapping moisture near the foliage.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the disease cycle and minimize the impact of the pathogen. Key practices include:

  • Managing crop residues through deep tillage to promote decomposition.
