Periconia leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Periconia manihoticola. As an obligate or facultative parasite of cassava, this fungus specifically targets the foliage, causing significant physiological stress to the plant. It is categorized as a significant phytopathological concern in tropical agriculture where cassava is cultivated on a commercial scale.
The disease primarily affects cassava (Manihot esculenta). While it is most frequently observed on leaves, it can also infect petioles and young stems under highly conducive environmental conditions. The intensity of the infection typically correlates with the plant's growth stage and the overall health of the agricultural ecosystem.
The primary symptoms include the appearance of small, brown to dark-grey necrotic lesions on the leaves. These spots often develop a yellow chlorotic halo, indicating the spread of fungal toxins into the leaf tissue. In severe cases, the lesions coalesce, leading to extensive tissue death, premature senescence, and subsequent defoliation, which severely limits the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
Development and spread of Periconia manihoticola are heavily dependent on environmental variables. High humidity levels, coupled with moderate temperatures and frequent rainfall, create optimal conditions for the production and germination of conidia. Wind and water splashing are the primary vectors for dispersing fungal spores within and between cassava fields, making management challenging in rainy seasons.

Proper cultural practices, such as maintaining adequate plant spacing to improve air circulation, removing infected plant debris to reduce primary inoculum, and applying appropriate fungicides during high-risk periods, are essential to maintain crop yield and ensure plant health.
