Peridiniaceae are a family of dinoflagellates that play a critical role in agricultural water management. While they do not directly infect crops like fungi or bacteria, their presence in irrigation water is a significant concern for farmers, as excessive growth can lead to physiological stress in plants and technical issues in irrigation systems.

The primary concern regarding these organisms is their impact on the quality of irrigation water. During "algal blooms," the chemical balance of the water shifts, which can interfere with nutrient uptake, cause root zone hypoxia, or clog delicate irrigation emitters and filtration systems, leading to uneven crop development.

These factors create an environment where the population can increase exponentially, severely compromising the quality of the water supply within a short period.
