Peridinium (lat. Peridinium) is a genus of single-celled dinoflagellate algae that can pose significant challenges in agricultural water management and hydroponic production. While not a classical plant pathogen, its rapid proliferation creates an environment detrimental to plant health and nutrient uptake efficiency.

The causative agent belongs to the dinoflagellate group, which thrives in nutrient-rich aquatic environments. In agricultural settings, it acts as an opportunistic competitor, consuming essential minerals intended for crop growth and releasing metabolites that can be toxic to plant root tissues.

This organism primarily impacts crops cultivated in recirculating hydroponic systems, such as lettuce, herbs, and rice paddies. When the population density of these algae spikes, it triggers a rapid decline in water quality, leading to the clogging of irrigation lines and nutrient delivery pathways.

Symptoms of an infestation include the appearance of a rust-colored or greenish turbidity in the nutrient solution and the development of a foul, earthy odor. Roots may become coated in a thick, slimy film, which prevents proper oxygenation and causes the plant to exhibit signs of severe wilting or chlorosis.

To control and prevent Peridinium, producers must maintain rigorous hygiene standards in their water supply systems. Effective strategies include implementing UV sterilization, ozone treatment of irrigation water, and maintaining adequate circulation to prevent stagnation. Regularly checking and stabilizing the nutrient solution's pH and temperature is also vital to keep the environment inhospitable to algal blooms.
