Description
Peronophythora is a destructive plant disease caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronophythora litchii. Often referred to as litchi downy blight, it is a significant threat to lychee orchards, capable of devastating production by affecting various parts of the host plant including inflorescences, leaves, and maturing fruit.
The primary host for this pathogen is the litchi tree (Litchi chinensis). The disease manifests by attacking young, tender tissues first, but it is most economically damaging when it affects fruit clusters, leading to rapid decay, browning, and significant yield loss before harvest time.
Visible symptoms include the appearance of dark, rapidly expanding necrotic lesions on leaves and fruit. Under humid conditions, a conspicuous white or grayish mold, representing the pathogen's sporulation, develops on the surface of the lesions. This rapid sporulation allows the disease to spread like wildfire throughout an orchard.
The progression of Peronophythora is heavily influenced by environmental factors. High relative humidity, persistent rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide the perfect medium for the production and dispersal of zoospores. Water splash during rain events serves as the main transmission mechanism between individual trees and rows.
Integrated management is essential for controlling this blight. Effective strategies include:
- Pruning to ensure adequate canopy ventilation and light penetration.
- Sanitation, including the prompt removal and disposal of infected plant debris.
- Application of specialized fungicides such as copper-based compounds or metalaxyl-based systemic products.
- Strategic timing of chemical applications before forecasted periods of heavy rain.
