Description
The causal agent of this disease is the oomycete Peronosclerospora philippinensis, a specialized fungal-like organism known to cause systemic infections in cereal crops. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the host plant's tissues to complete its biological cycle, disrupting nutrient flow and causing physiological collapse of the maize plant.
Maize is the primary economic host for this pathogen, though it can infect various wild and cultivated grass species. The disease is particularly severe in tropical environments, where high humidity and temperature regimes provide optimal conditions for the production and rapid dissemination of sporangia, leading to significant economic losses in corn production.
Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic streaks on leaves, which soon develop into a dense white downy layer of sporangiophores, especially on the underside of the leaves. Infected plants exhibit severe stunting, malformed inflorescences, and excessive tillering, often failing to produce any viable grain or developing only small, distorted cobs.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease epidemiology. The pathogen thrives under high nocturnal humidity (above 90%) and mild temperatures. Spores are primarily wind-borne and can spread quickly across fields, while the survival of the pathogen between seasons depends heavily on infected crop debris and soil-borne survival structures.
Management of the disease requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to mitigate its devastating impact:
- Seed treatment with systemic fungicides is the most effective preventative measure.
- Utilization of resistant or tolerant maize hybrids to limit infection spread.
- Implementing proper crop rotation and sanitizing the field by removing infected debris.
