Plantain downy mildew, caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronospora alta, is a significant disease affecting plantain crops. This specialized fungus primarily attacks the leaves, which are the primary product for pharmaceutical and herbal industries, leading to substantial yield losses if not managed correctly.
The characteristic symptoms of the disease include the formation of irregular, yellowish to brown spots on the upper leaf surface. A diagnostic feature is the appearance of a grayish-violet fungal growth on the underside of the leaves, consisting of sporangiophores and sporangia, which develop especially under humid conditions.
The development and spread of Peronospora alta are favored by high atmospheric humidity, persistent morning dew, and moderate temperatures. Dense crop spacing that limits airflow creates a microclimate conducive to the rapid spread of spores from infected plants to healthy tissues, often leading to severe outbreaks.
