Anemone downy mildew

Anemone downy mildew is a plant disease caused by the oomycete Peronospora anemones. It is a significant fungal-like pathogen that primarily impacts members of the Ranunculaceae family, specifically affecting various species of anemones in both domestic gardens and commercial nurseries.

The host range is largely restricted to the genus Anemone. The pathogen attacks the aerial organs of the plant, including leaves, stems, and flower stalks. The severity of the damage depends on environmental conditions, but heavy infestations can lead to complete plant collapse and loss of the floral display.

Symptoms typically begin with the appearance of pale yellow or chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface. Under humid conditions, a characteristic downy growth—varying in color from grey to violet—appears on the undersides of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these areas become necrotic, causing the leaves to curl, wither, and eventually die prematurely.

The spread of this pathogen is favored by cool, moist conditions and high humidity, which are essential for sporulation and spore dispersal. Water droplets, whether from rain or irrigation, facilitate the movement of spores between plants. Poor air circulation in crowded plantings creates a microclimate that drastically accelerates the development of an outbreak.

Management strategies require an integrated approach. Sanitation is critical, involving the thorough removal and destruction of all infected plant debris to minimize the soil-borne inoculum. Fungicide programs focusing on systemic or contact protectants should be implemented early in the season. Improving cultural practices, such as proper spacing and water management, remains the most effective long-term preventative measure.
