Description

Downy mildew of snapdragon is a severe fungal-like disease caused by the oomycete Peronospora antirrhini. This pathogen is a significant threat to greenhouse production and garden snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus). Once established, it can spread rapidly throughout the entire crop, leading to stunted growth and, in severe cases, the complete death of the plants.

The disease primarily targets snapdragons, affecting both seedlings and established flowering plants. It can colonize leaves, stems, and flower buds. Seedlings are particularly susceptible, as their compact growth and high planting density provide an easy path for the pathogen to move from plant to plant.

Symptoms of the infection usually begin as chlorotic, yellowish patches on the upper surface of the leaves. As the disease progresses, the primary diagnostic sign emerges on the underside of the foliage: a distinct grayish or violet-tinged, downy, fungal growth consisting of spores. Affected leaves eventually turn brown, curl up, and fall off, weakening the entire plant.

The development of Peronospora antirrhini is highly dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity (typically above 80%), moderate temperatures (15–20°C), and the presence of free water on foliage are critical for infection. The spores are primarily dispersed via splashing water, contaminated tools, or air currents moving through crowded, poorly ventilated areas.

Successful management of snapdragon downy mildew relies on a combination of cultural and chemical tactics:

  • Maintain low humidity and adequate airflow to keep foliage dry.
  • Avoid overhead irrigation; use drip or bottom-watering methods instead.
  • Remove and destroy any infected plant debris promptly.
  • Space plants appropriately to prevent the spread of pathogens through direct contact.
  • Apply preventative fungicide treatments, rotating between different chemical classes to avoid resistance development.
