Description
Pathogen and disease type. The disease is caused by Peronospora aquilegiicola, a highly specialized obligate oomycete pathogen. It belongs to the group of downy mildews, which are notorious for their rapid spread under specific environmental conditions. Unlike true powdery mildews, this pathogen thrives inside the plant tissue, deriving nutrients from host cells via specialized structures known as haustoria.
Host range. The primary and sole host for this pathogen is the columbine (Aquilegia). Due to its host-specificity, the fungus focuses its entire evolutionary strategy on exploiting the metabolic pathways of this specific genus. The disease primarily affects the foliage, although it can move to petioles and stems, leading to severe chlorosis and subsequent necrosis of the plant's photosynthetic organs.
Symptoms and signs. The characteristic symptoms begin as yellowish, chlorotic lesions on the upper leaf surface, often delineated by leaf veins. When humidity is high, a distinct grayish or violet-tinged fungal growth (mycelium and conidiophores) appears on the undersides of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions turn brown and necrotic, causing the leaves to curl, dry out, and fall prematurely.
Conditions for development. Peronospora aquilegiicola thrives in cool, humid environments. Temperatures between 15°C and 20°C, combined with prolonged leaf wetness (from rain, dew, or poor air circulation), are optimal for spore germination and infection. The pathogen persists through unfavorable seasons via oospores embedded in decaying plant debris, which can remain viable in the soil for significant periods.
Management and control. Effective disease management relies on an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and chemical intervention. Key strategies include:
- ensuring adequate plant spacing to facilitate airflow;
- removing and disposing of infected plant matter immediately;
- avoiding overhead irrigation to keep foliage dry;
- applying preventative or curative fungicides such as those containing copper, metalaxyl, or phosphonates.
