In humid conditions, a diagnostic fuzzy grey or whitish growth appears on the undersides of the leaves; this structure contains the sporangia and sporangiophores responsible for the secondary spread of the disease.
The development of Peronospora argemones is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and the presence of free water on leaf surfaces. Optimal temperatures for fungal development usually range between 15°C and 20°C, facilitating rapid sporulation and dispersal through air currents or splashing water.
