Primrose downy mildew is caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronospora arthurii. This organism acts as an obligate parasite, primarily affecting plants within the Primulaceae family. It is a significant concern for nursery growers and horticulturists, as it can rapidly compromise the health and marketability of ornamental crops.

The host range is primarily focused on various species of Primula and related plants. The pathogen colonizes the foliar tissues, drawing nutrients from the host and causing systemic stress. In commercial greenhouse environments, the disease can spread through entire blocks of production if environmental conditions remain unchecked.

Symptoms of Peronospora arthurii infection typically start as pale yellow or chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface, which gradually become necrotic and dark brown. A key diagnostic feature is the appearance of a fuzzy, grayish-purple mycelial mat on the undersides of leaves, which consists of sporangia and sporangiophores. Leaf curling and premature senescence are common late-stage symptoms.

Environmental conditions conducive to the development of this disease include high relative humidity levels, usually exceeding 85%, and cool to moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C. Water films on leaf surfaces are essential for the germination of sporangia and the subsequent infection process. Once established, the fungus can persist in the soil and plant debris as thick-walled oospores.

Effective management and prevention of this disease require an integrated approach including the following actions:

  • Maintaining optimal air circulation to reduce leaf wetness duration.
  • Strict sanitation protocols, including the removal and disposal of infected plant tissue.
  • Implementing appropriate irrigation methods, such as drip irrigation, to avoid foliage wetting.
  • Application of specialized fungicides effective against oomycetes during periods of high disease pressure.
