The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Peronospora belbahrii, which causes severe downy mildew. This pathogen is highly specific and has emerged as the most significant threat to commercial basil production worldwide, causing rapid defoliation.

The primary host for this pathogen is sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum). It infects the plant at all growth stages, posing a significant threat to seedlings in greenhouses and mature plants grown in open fields.

Symptoms initially appear as chlorotic, yellowing areas on the upper surface of the leaves, often confined within leaf veins. Under humid conditions, a characteristic gray or purplish sporulation layer develops on the underside of the leaves.
