Description
Peronospora chlorae is a specialized oomycete pathogen responsible for downy mildew, a destructive disease affecting members of the Gentianaceae family. As an obligate biotroph, this pathogen relies entirely on the living cells of its host to complete its biological cycle, which often leads to severe physiological stress for the infected plant.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are plants of the genus Gentiana. The disease is particularly problematic in both nursery settings and natural habitats where these plants are cultivated, often leading to rapid spread during periods of high environmental stress or poor air circulation within the plant canopy.
The symptoms typically manifest as pale chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface, which eventually turn necrotic and brown. A critical diagnostic feature is the appearance of a sparse to dense greyish or violet fungal growth on the underside of the leaves, which consists of masses of sporangiophores and sporangia, facilitating the dispersal of the pathogen to neighboring plants.

The pathogen can survive adverse conditions by producing resilient oospores within infected leaf debris, which remain viable in the soil for extended periods, serving as a constant source of primary inoculum.

Control strategies emphasize cultural practices, such as ensuring good drainage, proper plant spacing to improve airflow, and the prompt removal of infected materials.
