Description
The causal agent of this disease is the oomycete Peronospora cristata, which causes downy mildew. It acts as an obligate parasite, living within the host plant tissue and extracting nutrients through specialized structures known as haustoria, which penetrate the cell walls without killing the cell immediately.
The primary host for this pathogen is buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum). The infection targets the aerial parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and sometimes inflorescences, causing systemic or local damage depending on the environmental conditions and the developmental stage of the host.
The most common symptoms include yellowish or chlorotic lesions on the upper surface of the leaves. Under conditions of high humidity, a distinctive grayish-violet downy growth, consisting of sporangiophores and sporangia, emerges on the underside of the leaves. If left untreated, these spots may coalesce, leading to leaf necrosis and premature senescence.
The development of Peronospora cristata is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Spore production and germination are optimal in cool to moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C combined with high relative humidity. The pathogen survives in the soil and on crop debris as thick-walled oospores.
The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it leads to a reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the buckwheat plant. This damage inhibits proper grain filling, resulting in lower yields and poor-quality seeds. Effective management is essential to prevent large-scale losses in vulnerable production areas.
