Cyperus downy mildew is a plant disease caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronospora cyperi. As an obligate parasite, this organism specifically targets members of the Cyperaceae family, disrupting plant physiological processes by colonizing the leaf tissue.

The host range is primarily limited to various species of Cyperus. The disease is particularly problematic in nursery environments and landscape plantings where plant density is high and moisture management is difficult, creating a conducive environment for the pathogen.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface, which later become necrotic or browning in appearance. Under high humidity, the underside of the leaves develops a characteristic fuzz, representing the pathogen's sporulation structures, which can be greyish or violet in tint.

Environmental conditions are the primary driver of disease spread. The fungus thrives in cool to moderate temperatures and high humidity levels. Dissemination of conidia occurs mainly through wind currents and water splashes, making irrigation practices a critical factor in local epidemics.

The severity of the disease is marked by significant aesthetic and physiological damage. Affected plants suffer from stunted growth, leaf senescence, and reduced vigor. In severe cases, particularly in young specimens, the infection can lead to complete plant collapse if left untreated.

Effective management and prevention strategies include:

  • Implementing strict sanitation to remove infected plant debris promptly.
  • Increasing plant spacing to improve air circulation and reduce humidity around the foliage.
  • Avoiding overhead irrigation to prevent the water-mediated spread of spores.
  • Using appropriate fungicide applications, such as metalaxyl or strobilurins, during high-risk periods.
  • Monitoring environmental parameters like dew point and humidity to time protective sprays.
