Broom downy mildew, caused by the oomycete Peronospora cytisi, is a significant fungal-like disease affecting various species within the Cytisus genus. As an obligate parasite, this pathogen requires living host tissue to complete its life cycle, severely impacting the vitality and aesthetic quality of the plants it colonizes.
The primary host for this disease is broom (Cytisus), a popular ornamental shrub. The pathogen targets young shoots and leaves, disrupting normal photosynthetic processes and causing premature senescence. Without intervention, severe infections can weaken the plant, making it susceptible to secondary stressors such as pests and harsh environmental conditions.
Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic or discolored spots on the upper leaf surface, corresponding with the presence of fungal growth beneath. Under high humidity, a distinct greyish or purplish downy mold develops on the underside of the leaves. This is the sporulation phase, where the pathogen produces vast quantities of sporangia for further dispersal.
The development and spread of Peronospora cytisi are heavily dependent on climatic conditions. Excessive moisture, such as prolonged morning dew, frequent rain, and high humidity, provides the perfect environment for spore germination and infection. Dense foliage and poor air circulation within the shrub canopy are primary risk factors that exacerbate the spread.
Integrated management is essential for control. Culturally, this involves spacing plants correctly to improve airflow and avoiding overhead irrigation. Chemically, protective fungicides containing copper or other systemic anti-oomycete agents should be applied preventively or upon the earliest detection of symptoms to suppress mycelial development and protect new growth.
