Description

Carnation downy mildew, caused by the pathogen Peronospora dianthi, is a severe fungal-like disease affecting members of the Dianthus genus. It is widely recognized as one of the most destructive diseases in commercial carnation production, leading to significant yield and quality losses.

The pathogen primarily affects the foliage and stems of susceptible carnation varieties. Both greenhouse and open-field crops are vulnerable, although high-density greenhouse environments with poor ventilation provide ideal conditions for the rapid spread of the disease across the entire population.

Initial symptoms include chlorotic spotting on the upper leaf surfaces, which eventually turn necrotic and brown. A hallmark sign of the infection is the development of a dense, gray to purplish-gray mold on the undersides of the leaves, consisting of sporangia that facilitate the dispersal of the disease.

The development of Peronospora dianthi is strictly dependent on moisture and moderate temperatures. High relative humidity and prolonged periods of leaf wetness are essential for the germination of spores. Once established, the pathogen spreads rapidly via splashing water, air currents, and contaminated tools.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as improving airflow, reducing humidity, and ensuring proper spacing are critical. When the disease is detected, growers must promptly apply systemic or contact fungicides to suppress the pathogen and prevent further infection of healthy tissues.
