Description
Downy mildew of carnation is a significant plant disease caused by the oomycete Peronospora dianthicola. This pathogen specifically targets plants within the Dianthus genus, posing a major risk to both ornamental greenhouse production and open-field cultivation.
The infection manifests on various aerial plant parts, predominantly affecting the leaves and stems. As the fungus colonizes the host tissue, it interferes with normal physiological processes, leading to yellowing, necrosis, and premature senescence of the foliage.
The hallmark symptoms include chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface, which correspond to dense, greyish-purple or brown mycelial growth on the underside of the leaves. This sporulation is usually triggered by high humidity levels, often observed during cool, damp weather conditions.
The development of Peronospora dianthicola is favored by temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C and high ambient humidity. In greenhouse environments, lack of ventilation and overhead irrigation contribute significantly to the rapid spread of spores between susceptible plants.
Preventative and curative strategies are essential for effective management:
- maintaining proper plant spacing to ensure adequate air circulation;
- avoiding leaf wetness by utilizing drip irrigation instead of overhead systems;
- regular monitoring for early detection and immediate removal of infected plant debris;
- applying appropriate fungicides to manage the disease pressure in high-risk environments.
