Digitalis downy mildew, caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronospora digitalidis, is a significant fungal-like disease that specifically targets members of the Digitalis genus. As an obligate parasite, it relies on host tissue for survival and reproduction, making it a major threat to pharmaceutical herb production.

The primary hosts for this disease are foxglove species (Digitalis purpurea and Digitalis lanata). Because these plants are cultivated specifically for their cardiac glycosides, even a minor infection can compromise the chemical quality and yield of the harvested raw material.

Symptoms typically begin as chlorotic lesions on the upper leaf surface, which eventually turn necrotic. Under high humidity, the underside of the leaf develops a dense, grey-to-purple fungal growth, representing the sporangiophores of the pathogen. This leads to severe leaf blight and may cause the plant to collapse prematurely.

The development and spread of Peronospora digitalidis are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, leaf wetness, and cool to moderate temperatures. The pathogen produces oospores that allow it to survive in soil or plant debris for extended periods, serving as a primary inoculum source for subsequent seasons.
