Description
The disease known as downy mildew of spurge is caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronospora euphorbiae. As an obligate parasite, this pathogen strictly depends on the host plant to complete its life cycle. It is a highly specialized microorganism that causes systemic infection, significantly affecting the plant's metabolism and developmental potential.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are plants within the Euphorbia genus. This disease impacts various species of spurge, from native weeds to ornamental varieties grown in greenhouses or botanical gardens. The infection can lead to substantial losses in decorative quality, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of the plant.
