Peronospora ficariae is a plant pathogen belonging to the Oomycota phylum, responsible for causing downy mildew on specific botanical hosts, primarily the lesser celandine (Ficaria verna). As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on living host tissues to complete its life cycle, manifesting during the cool, wet conditions characteristic of early spring.

The host range is relatively narrow, typically restricted to species within the Ranunculaceae family. The pathogen penetrates the leaf stomata and colonizes the mesophyll tissue. While it primarily affects wild populations, understanding its biology is essential for broader studies on the evolution of downy mildews in temperate climates.

Visible symptoms include the appearance of pale yellow or chlorotic lesions on the upper leaf surface, which correspond to the area of fungal colonization inside the leaf. A diagnostic sign is the dense, greyish, or purplish fuzz on the underside of the leaves, representing the sporulation structures (sporangiophores) of the oomycete. In severe infections, leaves may curl, wither, and die prematurely.

Disease development is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high relative humidity and temperatures between 10°C and 18°C. The pathogen spreads through sporangia produced in the greyish fuzzy layers, which are disseminated by wind or rain splash. Long-term survival is achieved through the formation of thick-walled oospores, which remain dormant in the soil or decaying organic matter during unfavorable periods.

Management strategies focus on cultural practices to minimize pathogen pressure in infested areas. Because the pathogen is host-specific, rotation or removal of infested litter is effective. If chemical control is required, fungicides targeting oomycetes, such as those containing copper or metalaxyl, can be utilized, though they are rarely applied unless the pathogen poses a threat to sensitive ornamental or wild-planted areas.
