Description
Peronospora hariotii is a fungal-like pathogen belonging to the Oomycetes class, which causes a devastating disease known as downy mildew on cruciferous plants. It is highly specific to the Brassicaceae family, often compromising both commercial crops and wild host plants in various agricultural ecosystems.
The primary host range includes cabbage, broccoli, radish, rapeseed, and mustard. The pathogen affects these plants throughout their vegetative cycle, being particularly aggressive during high-humidity periods, which makes it a significant challenge for growers in temperate and moist climates.
The initial signs of infection appear as chlorotic, irregular spots on the upper leaf surface. Under favorable high-moisture conditions, a dense grayish-white or purplish downy growth of mycelium and spores develops on the underside of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots turn brown, and leaves may eventually wilt, wither, or drop prematurely.
The development of Peronospora hariotii is heavily dependent on moisture. Sporangia are dispersed by wind and splashing water, landing on the foliage where they germinate rapidly if leaf wetness persists for several hours. Mild temperatures between 15°C and 20°C are considered optimal for the pathogen's explosive reproduction and spread.
The economic impact of this disease is severe, primarily due to the loss of functional leaf surface area, which hinders photosynthesis and stunts plant growth. Effective management is crucial to minimize losses and should involve a systematic integration of cultural practices and chemical control strategies to ensure crop health and productivity.
