Peronospora lamii is a specialized obligate pathogen classified as an oomycete, responsible for causing downy mildew in plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family. This pathogen is highly host-specific, primarily targeting species within the genus Lamium (dead-nettle) and related mint-family plants, often spreading in both wild and cultivated populations.

The infection typically affects the foliage of the host plants. As an obligate parasite, it relies on living plant tissues to complete its life cycle. Once the zoospores germinate and enter the stomata, the mycelium colonizes the inter-cellular spaces, depriving the plant of essential nutrients and disrupting normal photosynthesis.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by chlorotic, pale yellow, or light green lesions on the upper leaf surfaces. A definitive diagnostic sign is the presence of dense, grayish-white or purplish sporulation on the underside of the leaves, which occurs under high humidity. In severe cases, the infected leaves become necrotic, dry out, and eventually drop prematurely.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental conditions. High relative humidity (exceeding 80%), cool temperatures, and the presence of free water on leaf surfaces are essential for spore germination and infection. The pathogen persists in the soil or in plant debris through thick-walled oospores, which allow it to survive winter or dry periods.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Key measures include:

  • Removing and destroying infected plant material to reduce inoculum levels.
  • Ensuring proper spacing and ventilation to reduce leaf wetness duration.
  • Utilizing crop rotation to prevent the buildup of oospores in the soil.
  • Applying fungicides (such as copper-based or systemic metalaxyl-containing products) during periods conducive to disease spread.
