Downy mildew, caused by the oomycete Peronospora leptoclada, is a significant pathology affecting buckwheat crops. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on living host tissues to complete its biological cycle, specifically targeting Fagopyrum esculentum during favorable climatic windows.

The primary host for this pathogen is buckwheat. The disease impacts plants throughout their growth cycle, manifesting early on the cotyledons or true leaves. If the infection reaches high intensity, the overall health of the field deteriorates, leading to yield losses and reduced grain quality.

Symptoms initially appear as chlorotic or pale spots on the upper leaf surfaces. As the pathogen matures, a fine greyish or violet-tinted mold layer develops on the undersides of these lesions. If left unmanaged, the leaves necroticise, shrivel, and shed prematurely, starving the plant of energy.

The development of Peronospora leptoclada is heavily influenced by environmental moisture. High relative humidity, persistent morning dew, and moderate temperatures provide the perfect medium for zoospore dissemination and germination. Thick crop stands that lack proper air circulation are particularly vulnerable to rapid outbreaks.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for control. Farmers should prioritize the use of resistant buckwheat cultivars and practice crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum. During peak infection seasons, the application of specialized fungicides can help mitigate the spread and protect the crop yield.
