Description

Pathogen and disease type. Soybean downy mildew is a fungal-like disease caused by the oomycete Peronospora manshurica. This pathogen is a specialized obligate parasite that specifically infects the soybean crop throughout its growth cycle, often appearing during periods of humid weather.

Host plants. The primary and only significant host for Peronospora manshurica is the soybean plant (Glycine max). The disease is widespread globally wherever soybeans are cultivated, and its ability to persist in soil via oospores and contaminate seeds makes it a recurring problem for farmers.

Symptoms and signs. The disease manifests as pale green to yellow spots on the upper leaf surface, commonly referred to as "chlorotic spots." In high-humidity conditions, a gray or light-violet fungal mat forms on the underside of these spots, which is the site of active sporulation. As the infection progresses, these areas turn necrotic and brown, causing premature defoliation.

Environmental conditions. The development of downy mildew is heavily favored by cool to moderate temperatures ranging from 18°C to 22°C and high humidity. Frequent rainfall and persistent dew promote the germination of sporangia, allowing the pathogen to spread rapidly across the canopy via wind and rain splashes.

Economic impact and management. While often not lethal to the plant, significant infections reduce the photosynthetic leaf area, leading to decreased yields and lighter, poorer quality seed. Management relies on integrated practices:

  • Planting resistant or tolerant soybean cultivars.
  • Practicing crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
  • Using high-quality, fungicide-treated seeds.
  • Applying foliar fungicides if environmental conditions favor disease outbreaks.
  • Ensuring proper residue management to reduce primary inoculum sources in the soil.
