Description
Downy mildew of stocks is a destructive fungal-like disease caused by the oomycete Peronospora matthiolae. As a specialized pathogen, it primarily attacks plants belonging to the Brassicaceae family. The disease is known to significantly impact both garden-grown stocks and commercial florist production, leading to severe leaf damage and plant decline.
The primary host for this pathogen is the stock plant (Matthiola). The disease affects all aerial parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and flower buds. Seedlings are particularly susceptible, often succumbing to the disease if environmental conditions favor the rapid reproduction of the fungal pathogen.
Visible symptoms include the appearance of chlorotic, yellowish patches on the upper surface of the leaves. Under conditions of high humidity, a diagnostic fuzzy greyish or purplish fungal growth appears on the undersides of the leaves. As the infection progresses, these areas become necrotic, leaves wither, and the entire plant may become stunted or die prematurely.
The development of the disease is strictly dependent on moisture and moderate temperatures. Cool, damp weather or humid greenhouse environments provide ideal conditions for the production and dispersal of sporangia. The pathogen spreads primarily through wind currents, splashing water from irrigation, or direct contact, and can persist in soil and infected plant debris for long periods.
Management of downy mildew involves a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Key measures include maintaining low humidity through proper ventilation, avoiding overhead irrigation, and removing and destroying infected plant debris. If cultural practices fail to contain the infection, systemic and protective fungicides should be applied, focusing on early detection and thorough coverage of the foliage.
