Description
Peronospora oerteliana is a specific fungal-like pathogen belonging to the oomycete group, which causes downy mildew disease in various species of Geranium. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the host plant to complete its biological cycle, causing systemic stress to the infected geranium.
The disease symptoms typically begin with chlorotic yellow spots appearing on the upper surface of the leaves, often limited by leaf veins. As the disease progresses, these spots turn brown or necrotic, and under high humidity, a dense, grayish-purple sporulation layer appears on the underside of the leaves.
The spread of Peronospora oerteliana is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly cool temperatures (15°C to 22°C) combined with high humidity or leaf wetness. These conditions facilitate the release and germination of sporangia, allowing the pathogen to spread rapidly across nursery benches or garden beds through air currents and water splashes.
The impact of this disease is significant, as it leads to severe leaf defoliation, aesthetic loss, and physiological decline of the plant. If left unchecked, the infection can become chronic within a collection, weakening the overall vigor of the geraniums and potentially resulting in plant mortality.
Management strategies focus on sanitation and environmental control: reducing leaf wetness, improving airflow, and removing infected tissue immediately. Chemical control involves the application of fungicides labeled for oomycete management, specifically those with systemic action to protect new foliage and halt the progression of the pathogen.
