The pathogen Peronospora ornithopi is an obligate oomycete responsible for downy mildew, a significant fungal-like disease affecting members of the Ornithopus genus. This pathogen is a highly specialized parasite that disrupts the physiological processes of the host plant, leading to reduced productivity.
The primary host for this pathogen is serradella (Ornithopus sativus). The disease affects both young seedlings and mature plants, potentially causing systemic infection within the tissue. Its impact is most pronounced in agricultural fields where serradella is cultivated as a forage crop or green manure.
Diagnostic symptoms include the appearance of chlorotic, pale-yellow lesions on the adaxial leaf surface. Under humid conditions, a characteristic downy growth, consisting of sporangiophores and sporangia, emerges on the abaxial side of the leaf, typically appearing grayish or violet in color.
The development of the disease is strictly dependent on high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. The oospores of the pathogen serve as the primary inoculum, persisting in soil or plant debris. Secondary spread occurs via air-borne sporangia, which facilitate rapid dispersal throughout the field during rainy or foggy conditions.
The economic impact of the disease is characterized by significant reduction in biomass yield and leaf area index. Severe infestations can lead to premature senescence and death of the foliage, drastically lowering the nutritional value of the fodder and impacting the potential yield of seed production.
