Description

The pathogen Peronospora potentillae is an oomycete responsible for downy mildew in plants of the Potentilla genus (cinquefoil). This obligate parasite targets the host plant tissue, causing physiological disturbances. Unlike true powdery mildew, this disease requires high humidity for both infection and sporulation to occur successfully.

Cinquefoil varieties, including both herbaceous and woody types, are primary hosts for this infection. The pathogen exploits the leaf tissue, significantly reducing the surface area available for photosynthesis, which is critical for the plant's survival and its ability to store energy for the following season.

Initial signs of the infection typically appear as chlorotic, yellowish, or reddish-brown spots on the upper leaf surface, often bounded by leaf veins. A key diagnostic feature is the appearance of a fuzzy, grayish-white to purple fungal growth on the underside of the leaves, which consists of sporangiophores and sporangia released to infect adjacent plants.

The development and spread of Peronospora potentillae are highly dependent on environmental conditions. Cool temperatures combined with excessive leaf moisture—such as dew, persistent fog, or rainfall—are the primary catalysts for outbreaks. Poor air circulation in garden beds or nurseries provides the stable microclimate the pathogen needs to flourish.

Integrated management is necessary to control the spread of the disease. Key preventive and control measures include:

  • Maintaining proper spacing between plants to enhance air circulation and reduce humidity.
  • Removing and destroying infected plant debris to minimize the source of overwintering inoculum.
  • Applying fungicides containing active ingredients like metalaxyl or copper-based compounds for protection.
  • Watering at the base of the plant to avoid keeping foliage wet for extended periods.
