Description
Peronospora radii is a specific fungal-like pathogen belonging to the Oomycetes class, responsible for downy mildew in plants within the Asteraceae family. As an obligate parasite, this pathogen relies entirely on the living host tissue to complete its life cycle, causing significant physiological stress to the infected plants.
The disease primarily impacts members of the Asteraceae family, most notably chrysanthemums, daisies (Leucanthemum), and various types of asters. The infection often targets the foliage and floral parts, causing severe chlorosis and necrosis, which can result in the rapid decline and death of the plant if left untreated.
Symptoms are identified by the appearance of yellowish, angular spots on the upper leaf surfaces, which eventually turn necrotic. Under high humidity conditions, a diagnostic greyish-white or purplish sporulation layer develops on the underside of the leaves, which acts as the primary source of inoculum for secondary infections throughout the growing season.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Peronospora radii. High relative humidity, persistent morning dew, and temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C create an ideal environment for spore germination and colonization. Wind, splashing rain, and contact with contaminated tools are the primary vectors for transmission between individual plants.
Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural practices and chemical intervention. Growers should focus on reducing leaf wetness, optimizing spacing to improve airflow, and sanitizing the growing environment by removing infected debris. When disease pressure is high, the application of protective or systemic fungicides is essential to manage the pathogen population and prevent total crop loss.
