Downy mildew of poppy, caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronospora somniferi, is a severe fungal-like disease that affects poppy cultivation globally. It acts as an obligate parasite, drawing nutrients directly from the host plant's cells, which leads to stunted development and eventual systemic decline of the crop.
The primary host for this pathogen is the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). The disease affects various parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and flower buds, and can occur throughout the entire growing season, significantly impacting the productivity of industrial poppy fields.
Infected plants display characteristic pale, chlorotic spots on the leaf surface. Under favorable high-humidity conditions, a distinctive grayish-purple, felt-like fungal growth develops on the underside of the leaves.
