Downy mildew, caused by the oomycete Peronospora sordida, is a severe plant disease specifically affecting snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus). As an obligate parasite, this pathogen colonizes plant tissues, leading to significant physiological stress and aesthetic damage to the host plant.

The primary host for Peronospora sordida is the snapdragon. The disease is frequently observed in greenhouse environments, where high plant density and controlled climatic conditions can facilitate rapid infection spread across entire batches of seedlings.

Initial symptoms are characterized by chlorotic, pale-yellow patches on the upper surface of the leaves. As the infection progresses, especially under humid conditions, a characteristic greyish or violet fungal mat emerges on the undersides of the leaves. Infected foliage often becomes distorted, chlorotic, and eventually necrotic, leading to leaf drop.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in the development of this disease. The pathogen thrives in high relative humidity, frequent overhead irrigation, and stagnant air. These conditions allow the zoospore populations to germinate and infect healthy tissue efficiently, making moisture management a primary concern for growers.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the impact of the pathogen. Strategies include optimizing greenhouse airflow to prevent leaf wetness, sanitation of growing areas, and the use of resistant varieties when available. Regular application of effective fungicides, following a proper rotation to prevent resistance, is essential for controlling outbreaks in commercial settings.
