Description
Downy mildew of rose is a devastating fungal-like disease caused by the oomycete Peronospora sparsa. Unlike powdery mildew, which affects the surface of the leaves, this pathogen penetrates deep into the plant tissue. It is considered a major threat to commercial rose production and private gardens worldwide due to its ability to spread rapidly under high humidity conditions.
The disease primarily targets species of the genus Rosa, affecting both greenhouse and outdoor varieties. It is also known to infect other Rosaceae members, including blackberry and raspberry. The pathogen can attack any aerial part of the plant, but leaves and young shoots are the most frequent sites of infection, leading to significant structural damage.
Diagnostic signs begin with the appearance of purplish-red or angular brown spots on the leaf surface, often delineated by the leaf veins. In moist conditions, a faint greyish or whitish downy growth of conidiophores and spores develops on the underside of the leaf. Severe infections lead to leaf yellowing, necrosis, and rapid defoliation, which can drastically reduce the plant's vigor.
Environmental conditions are critical for the development of Peronospora sparsa. High humidity levels, combined with cool to moderate temperatures, create an ideal environment for spore germination. The disease cycle is frequently interrupted by dry weather, but spores can survive in dormant plant tissues or as oospores in the soil, ready to re-emerge when conditions become favorable again.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Sanitation is the first priority: remove and destroy all fallen leaves and infected prunings to reduce inoculum pressure. Improving air circulation by proper spacing and pruning is essential. Chemical control is often necessary during humid seasons, involving the use of systemic fungicides specifically effective against oomycetes, alternating active ingredients to prevent resistance development.
