Description
Soybean downy mildew, caused by the oomycete Peronospora swinglei, is a widespread disease affecting soybean crops globally. As an obligate parasite, it relies on living host tissue to complete its life cycle and thrive. The pathogen is recognized as a significant constraint to soybean production in many humid temperate and subtropical agricultural regions.
The primary host for this pathogen is the soybean plant (Glycine max). The disease affects all aerial parts of the plant including cotyledons, leaves, stems, and pods. The pathogen survives between seasons in the form of oospores present in crop debris or on the seed coat, serving as the primary source of inoculum for the next planting season.
Symptoms typically start as chlorotic, pale green spots on the upper leaf surface, which later turn yellow and eventually brown. On the corresponding undersides, a characteristic grayish-purple fungal fuzz appears, which consists of sporangiophores and sporangia. In severe cases, extensive leaf yellowing and necrosis occur, leading to premature defoliation.
The development of Peronospora swinglei is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Rainfall, morning dew, and fog provide the necessary moisture for the germination of sporangia and subsequent infection of plant tissues. High plant density can also exacerbate the disease spread.
Economic damage from downy mildew is primarily attributed to the reduction in photosynthetic leaf area, which negatively impacts seed fill and yield quantity. Effective management strategies involve the use of disease-resistant varieties, implementation of crop rotation, and the application of seed treatments. Foliar fungicides may also be utilized if disease pressure is high during early growth stages.
