Description
The causative agent of the disease is the oomycete Peronospora trifoliorum, which triggers downy mildew. This pathogen is an obligate parasite that survives in the soil as oospores or persists within the host plant tissues as mycelium, making it a persistent threat to perennial fields.
The primary hosts affected by this pathogen include various species of clover (Trifolium) and alfalfa. The disease is particularly problematic in dense stands where air circulation is restricted and humidity remains consistently high, favoring the pathogen's life cycle.
Symptoms initially appear as chlorotic, yellowish spots on the upper side of the leaves. Under conditions of high humidity, a characteristic grayish-violet downy growth develops on the undersides of these spots, which represents the sporulation stage of the fungus.
