Description

The disease is caused by the oomycete Peronospora violae, known for triggering downy mildew. This pathogen is host-specific, primarily targeting plants within the genus Viola, which includes both popular garden pansies and various wild violet species found in gardens and greenhouses.

Symptoms typically start as pale yellow or chlorotic spots appearing on the upper surface of the leaves. Under conditions of high humidity, a distinctive grayish or purple-tinged fungal growth develops on the undersides of the leaves, representing the sporulation of the pathogen.

The disease thrives in environments characterized by high relative humidity, cool to moderate temperatures, and poor air circulation. Spores are easily disseminated by splashing water from irrigation, rainfall, and air currents, which facilitates the rapid spread of the disease within susceptible plantings.

The damage caused by Peronospora violae is significant, as it leads to premature defoliation, stunted growth, and the distortion of flower stalks. Severe infestations can rapidly debilitate the plant, depriving it of its photosynthetic capacity and ultimately causing widespread mortality in dense garden beds.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach:

  • improving aeration to lower leaf moisture;
  • avoiding overhead irrigation;
  • prompt removal and destruction of infected plant debris;
  • application of appropriate fungicides when symptoms appear.
