As an epiphyte, it does not penetrate plant tissues or extract nutrients from the tree, meaning it lacks the biological capacity to act as a parasite or pathogen in agricultural crops.
The lichen appears as a dense, chalky-white to greyish crust with distinctive coral-like, warty excrescences. Unlike fungal infections that cause wood decay, necrosis, or internal wilting, Pertusaria corallina grows strictly on the surface. Its presence serves as a bioindicator, typically suggesting high humidity, poor air circulation within the tree canopy, or a decline in the tree's overall physiological vigor.
This lichen is commonly found on fruit trees with rough, mature bark. While not a disease itself, its presence can become a management concern. Dense lichen covers can retain excessive moisture against the bark, creating a micro-environment that may attract wood-boring insects or favor the spores of actual pathogenic fungi, thereby indirectly complicating orchard plant protection.
Management strategies for this lichen focus on overall orchard hygiene and cultural practices rather than chemical eradication. Improving tree canopy ventilation through regular pruning is the most effective way to inhibit its growth. By ensuring better light penetration and air movement, the environment becomes less suitable for lichen colonization, promoting a healthier bark condition overall.
If physical removal is necessary for orchard maintenance, it should be performed mechanically during the dormant season. Using non-metallic brushes or scrapers to remove loose bark and lichen crusts is recommended, followed by a light application of disinfecting agents such as iron sulfate. This approach cleans the bark surface, reduces the humidity trapped on the trunk, and supports the tree's natural resistance.
